Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB (Long Beach, CA)
If you want to be shaken out of complacency and enjoy an entertaining evening that provokes controversy and thought, check out Holly Hughes and Tim Miller at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Both performance artists put on separate but equally provocative shows that are fiercely funny, witty and biting with satire. In Sapphic Sampler Platter, Hughes combines poetry and a compelling narrative style to take you through her life experiences, which include being a fellow traveler at the WOW café (a home for wayward girls), being a member of a feminist cooperative consisting of feminists who were kicked out of other feminist groups for having the wrong haircut, as well as her hilarious misadventures in academia (she’s currently a college professor). In Sex/Body/Self, Miller shares excerpts from his vast catalogue, which focus on the role that performance plays in creating identity. He mixes opinionated rants with highly stimulating and humorous vignettes that include explorations of what being queer might be like in the future.
