Ballet Jörgen Canada opens the Flato Markham Theatre’s 2012-13 Diamond Series Season with a world premiere performance of the most revered classical ballet, Swan Lake. The centerpiece of the Toronto-based company’s silver anniversary season, this Canadian re-telling of the timeless classic was created by award-winning choreographer and the company’s founder, Bengt Jörgen. Set to the evocative Tchaikovsky score, Jörgen’s newest masterpiece takes place in the 18th century seascape at Fortress Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. A company of 25 of the best ballet dancers in North America bring the tragic tale of faithful love to life through vibrant contemporary choreography. They are joined by the Mariinsky Ballet Company’s Grigory Popov who will dance the lead role. Grigory, widely known for his electric vigor and his ability to hold soaring jumps, is a graduate of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and an international winner of the Vaganova-Prix International Competition. He makes his debut as Ballet Jörgen’s first Artist-in-Residence at the Flato Markham Theatre on Saturday, September 28th at 8:00 p.m., followed by a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday, September 29th.
“We are delighted to celebrate Ballet Jörgen Canada’s remarkable 25th Anniversary Season, and to offer Flato Markham Theatre patrons the first opportunity to experience this World Premiere production,” said General Manager, Eric Lariviere. “Bengt Jörgen’s attention to choreographic detail and uniquely Canadian perspective has earned Ballet Jörgen Canada a reputation as one of this country’s most distinguished classical ballet companies, and we are honoured to have them kick off our dazzling 12-13 Diamond Series Season”.
“This version of Swan Lake will be set in and around the Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia in the 18th century, and so people in our audiences will see Canadian heritage intrinsically reflected in the piece. I am so excited to do this work and to be able to do it with the kind of incredible dancers that we have,” adds Ballet Jörgen Canada’s Artistic Director & CEO Bengt Jörgen. “Swan Lake has an evocative and inspiring quality that makes it such a pleasure to work on and I'm excited about transferring that feeling to the people watching it. I am especially pleased that the World Premiere of this magical ballet will take place at the beautiful and intimate Flato Markham Theatre which serves as a second home to the company. "
Ballet Jörgen Canada also announces several community events taking place in Markham, ON in conjunction with the September 28 and 29, 2012 premiere of Swan Lake at the Flato Markham Theatre.
Later this season, Ballet Jörgen Canada will present its stunning productions of The Nutcracker at the Flato Markham Theatre with two performances at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 30, 2012. The Nutcracker, A Canadian Tradition is a national Christmas treasure that blends the magic of dance with the beauty of northern Ontario, through the magnificent landscape paintings by Group of Seven artists.
