Corpus Christi: Documentary Screening and Live Performance
Hoover-Leppen Theater at Center on Halsted (Chicago, IL)
Corpus Christi, a passion play by four-time Tony Award-winner Terrence McNally (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class, Ragtime), depicts Jesus and the Apostles as gay men living in modern-day Texas, and carries a strong message of tolerance. The show ignited a firestorm of controversy upon its release in 1998, which has hardly died down since. In fact, there’s been a protest campaign launched against this very Chicago production — ironic, since the related documentary depicts the ongoing debate between the LGBT community and religious groups over the five-year journey of “the gay Jesus play.” Don’t miss this chance to experience both the play and the documentary on its Chicago run.
