Off Broadway Baseball Hit Matty: An Evening with Christy Mathewson
Fremont Centre Theatre (South Pasadena, CA)
We all know the name Babe Ruth, even if we’re not baseball fans. But before the Babe dominated the sport, there was a true Giant who was just as popular in his day. Christy Mathewson was a Hall of Fame pitcher for the New York Giants (1900 to 1916). But even more than that, he was a gentleman and homespun philosopher who helped to elevate the then-rowdy sport of baseball into America’s game. Actor Eddie Frierson spent 12 years researching and writing his play, and now he brings the baseball great to life in this two-hour solo performance. Frierson chronicles many of the era’s most fascinating personalities and events, including Frank Chance, Harry Pulliam, Bill Klem, Fred Merkle’s “Boner,” Charles “Victory” Faust, John McGraw, Hal Chase and the Black Sox Scandal.
