A warped and tuneful tour through American history, Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins is a darkly comic and compelling look at the lives, loves and legacies of nine presidential assassins, including John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald. Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Revival on Broadway as well as the Drama Desk Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Assassins incorporates classic Sondheim dark comedy into an imaginary world where historical assassins communicate with one another about their hopes, dreams and aspirations. As the musical fleshes out the characters of the killers (or would-be killers) within the framework of a grisly carnival game, the revue-style portrayal compels the audience to consider their motivations and the part American culture plays in creating these monsters. The music varies to reflect the popular music in the era of each character portrayed.
