In 1988, Peter Allen’s Legs Diamond, the musical story of mob gunman Jack “Legs” Diamond, became a notorious flop. After the release of a subsequent book and movie about Jack Diamond, the theatrical production has been resurrected on stage for the first time since its original New York premiere more than 20 years ago. In Musical Theatre West’s reincarnation of Legs Diamond, the eponymous depression-era mobster becomes a song and dance man who operates several New York speakeasies. Legs Diamond is presented as part of the Reiner Reading Series, which focuses on staged readings of classical musicals and forgotten gems that might not otherwise be produced on a larger scale. This one-night-only staged reading features veteran Musical Theatre West actors Tracy Lore (Hairspray, 42nd Street) and David Engel (Hairspray, The Producers) and Broadway actors Gwen Stewart (Rent, Big River) and Melissa Fahn (Broadway’s Wicked).
