Repertory East Playhouse is kicking off its 2013 season with 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a musical comedy that follows six young people vying for a spelling championship and navigating the trials and tribulations of puberty. They get little help from their grown-up chaperones, who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. Before the contest is over, the students learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The Tony-winning creative team behind the musical has created a quirky but lovable cast of characters that you can’t help but root for, as well as humorous and catchy songs that capture teenage angst at its finest, from “Woe Is Me” to “My Unfortunate Erection (Chip’s Lament).”
