Alex Theatre (Glendale, CA)
Very few films have reached the stature of Sunset Boulevard. It placed within the top 15 films on the AFI’s “100 Years … 100 Movies” list, outranking Star Wars, Psycho and 2001: A Space Odyssey. More than 50 years after its release, Roger Ebert claims Sunset Boulevard “remains the best drama ever made about the movies.” And then there’s the matter of its final line — “All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up!” — a quote so immortal, it’s practically a catchphrase. Now the Alex Film Society is putting this film noir classic right back where it belongs: on the big screen of the Alex Theatre, the movie palace and National Historic Landmark. Watch again in glorious black and white the tragic story of Joe Gillis (William Holden), a down-and-out screenwriter, and Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), the faded film star who entraps him in a web of nostalgia and delusion.
