Rosemary’s Baby Writer Takes to Stage With Veronica’s Room

The Underground Theatre (Hollywood, CA)

Ira Levin is best known for writing The Boys from Brazil, Stepford Wives, and Rosemary’s Baby. But Levin also turned his ingenious imagination to the stage and Veronica’s Room is among the darkest and most insidious of all his efforts. Invited to a crumbling mansion by its charming Irish caretakers, Susan, a young co-ed, is met with an usual request. Since she strongly resembles “Veronica,” the long-dead relative of the mansion’s current owner, could she possibly visit Veronica’s room and try on some of her clothes? The caretakers convince Susan that the sight of “Veronica” alive again might soothe their employer, an elderly woman afflicted with dementia. But a compassionate-sounding request masks a fiendish plot with hellish consequences Susan might never escape. The Visceral Company presents the 40th anniversary revival of this gripping thriller, its shocking ending as powerful as ever.
