Los Angeles County Museum of Art – Bing Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

In conjunction with the exhibition Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy, LACMA presents a musical-and-ballet celebration of the great Italian master. Caravaggio was known for his use of light and shadow, and heavily influenced the Baroque school of painting with his realistic and emotional portrayals of human life and religious scenes. This tribute to the artist begins with a performance by Baroque instrumentalists in the exhibition galleries, followed by the American premiere of Caravaggio. The ballet, which uses fragments of music and instruments that appear in Caravaggio’s paintings, is inspired by the contrast of light and darkness in the artist’s works as well as his violent and controversial lifestyle.
