You may be more familiar with the three film versions of this story, including the Oscar-winning 1941 movie Here Comes Mr. Jordan starring Robert Montgomery, an eponymous 1978 version starring Warren Beatty and the 2001 film Down to Earth starring Chris Rock. In the play, Mr. Jordan is checking passengers who are heading to the afterlife when his routine is interrupted by the arrival of Joe Pendleton, an attractive prizefighter, who refuses to admit he is dead. It turns out that Joe is not scheduled to arrive for another 60 years and Mr. Jordan is forced to find him a new body and return him to Earth. Written by Harry Segall, this smart romantic comedy is full of laughs and sincerity as it tackles questions of love, destiny and free will.
