Hudson Theatre Cafe (Los Angeles, CA)

Newton Country Players presents A.R. Gurney’s two-character play Love Letters, featuring a different pair of actors each night. Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. They briefly become romantically involved as teenagers and even after, continue to exchange letters through boarding school, college and beyond. Andy excels at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” The play spans nearly 50 years, as the two friends discuss the hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats that have passed between them throughout their largely separated lives. The cafe setting of the theater provides a relaxed and intimate atmosphere for a romantic pre-Valentine’s day evening.
