Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, CA)

Gustavo Dudamel leads the outstanding players of the Colburn Orchestra in a rare Sounds About Town performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall. This popular conductor’s dynamic style and enthusiasm for bold programming has invigorated the local classical music scene and drawn in new audiences from all ages and walks of life. The program for this evening includes Silvestre Revueltas’ Sensemayà, adapted from a poem by Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén, based on a ritual Afro-Caribbean chant performed while killing a snake. Also featured is Copland’s Clarinet Concerto featuring award-winning musician Sang Yoon Kim on clarinet. Finally, the orchestra will play Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a musical expression of victory after terrible strife. This piece was most famously broadcast live by the Leningrad Radio Symphony Orchestra as bombs fell around the city during the Siege of Leningrad. The progression from tragedy to triumph has inspired audiences and made it a popular piece in turbulent times.
