Mark Taper Forum (Los Angeles, CA)

Nina Raine’s Tribes follows Billy, a deaf man raised inside the defiantly idiosyncratic and politically incorrect cocoon of his parents’ house. He’s adapted brilliantly to his hearing family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never returned the favor, leaving Billy isolated and alone, without the use of sign language. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness herself, that he finally understands what it feels like to be understood. The play premiered at London’s Royal Court in 2010 with a sold-out run that garnered rave reviews and numerous honors. This production, directed by Obie Award-winner David Cromer (Our Town), arrives direct from another critically acclaimed appearance off-Broadway, where it won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Best Play.
