The Los Angeles Theatre Center (Los Angeles, CA)
Set in the perfect neighborhood, Habitat is a potent work that looks at the relationships between mothers and their children. Janet and her mother Margaret both live in houses on Mapleview Lanes. When a social worker opens a group home for troubled kids in the neighborhood, the community shows little tolerance for the new residents. In an attempt to gain approval from her mother, Janet leads a lawsuit against the group home. Meanwhile, Raine, a foster teen having trouble dealing with her mother’s death, finds herself caught in the battle over whether the group home stays or not. Judith Thompson’s heartbreaking work is at once funny, disconcerting and poignant.
