Balanchine Festival RED Celebrates the Master Choreographer

Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB (Long Beach, CA)

Los Angeles Ballet’s 2013 Balanchine Festival RED is part two of a historic two-part series of George Balanchine masterworks. Festival RED features three of the influential choreographer’s greatest ballets. In La Valse, a one-act story ballet, Maurice Ravel’s music is the backdrop for a young woman’s fascination with a sinister figure at a ball. Powered by Igor Stravinsky’s score, twelve dancers in black and white engage in a contest of dance in Agon. And Balanchine collaborates with Stravinsky once again in Rubies, the jazzy, exuberant center section of his full-length ballet, Jewels. Arrive early for a pre-performance talk with arts journalist Victoria Looseleaf and LAB Co-Artistic Director Colleen Neary.
