REDCAT: Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

Animals, the first feature film from Spanish director Marçal Forés, is a dark and strange coming-of-age story, which has been compared to Donnie Darko, American Beauty and the work of Gus Van Sant. The film zooms in on 17-year-old Pol, whose best friend is a walking, English-speaking stuffed bear named Deerhoof. Pol’s life becomes even more complicated after a strange series of events occurs involving his gay friend, a local girl’s death, a sexy new transfer student and his English teacher (played by Martin Freeman, The Hobbit). Blurring the line between fantasy and reality, Animals takes audiences on a wild ride as we watch Pol discover that nothing in this weird, weird world is what it seems.
