The Canyon (Agoura Hills, CA)
A successful alt-rock band with an accordion player at center stage might’ve seemed improbable before the current roots revival, but mere seconds into the BoDeans’ classic ’90s hit “Closer to Free” (best remembered as the theme song to TV’s Party of Five), you’re reminded how ahead of their time they were. Formed in Wisconsin, the BoDeans started out with an even rootsier sound, guided by T-Bone Burnett, before transitioning into alt-rock and mainstream success with singles like “Only Love,” “Dreams,” “Feed the Fire” and more. Helmed by founding frontman Kurt Neumann, the band recently released their 11th studio album, American Made, with zydeco, Celtic mountain music, Southern soul, folk and rock influences.
