The Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center (Santa Monica, CA)
King Henry VIII shocked the world when he divorced Katherine of Aragon to marry the bewitching Anne Boleyn. Katherine’s countrymen in Spain were particularly enraged at the insult to the long-suffering queen. Shakespeare covered these events in his last play and now Rakatá, Madrid’s premier classical theater company, is taking on the Shakespeare play from a different point of view. Shakespeare tells the story from the English perspective, while Rakatá reimagines the story from the Spanish view of events. Performed in Spanish with English subtitles, Rakatá’s version of the play was described as “a supremely accomplished retelling of this most notorious episode in English history” by The Guardian UK.
