House of Blues on the Sunset Strip (West Hollywood, CA)
The long, strange trip continues for Mickey Hart, whose latest disc and tour, Superorganism, features the sounds of the former Grateful Dead drummer’s brain waves, which he’ll demo by wearing an EEG cap during part of the the show. Along with cuts from the 2013 release, which explores the connection between the human body and sound, the band’s shows typically feature a mix of songs from throughout Hart’s career, including Grateful Dead tunes. As half of the percussion pair known as the Rhythm Devils, Hart and Bill Kreutzmann expanded their drumming way beyond rock, leading to Hart’s later career as a ethnomusicologist and a world-music pioneer. In fact, he won the first ever Grammy in that genre with his disc Planet Drum. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer continues his musical explorations as he approaches his 70th birthday in September.
