Long Beach Playhouse – MainStage (Long Beach, CA)

George Bernard Shaw's "The Philanderer"

Decades before he brought Pygmalion to the stage (the basis for the musical My Fair Lady), George Bernard Shaw wrote this comedic social commentary about sex, love, marriage and manners. Originally written in 1893, The Philanderer wasn’t produced for nearly a decade due to Britain’s strict censorship laws. The play centers around philanderer Leonard who’s pursued by two women: Julia, a modern woman clinging to romantic attachment despite her professed progressive views, and liberated widow Grace. What’s a philanderer to do? Leonard’s exploits culminate in a witty and blazing battle of the sexes and generations.
