Hudson Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
While working as an interpreter for CNN in 1989, Ann Starbuck found herself swept up in China’s Tiananmen Square uprising. In the 25th anniversary of that tumultuous time, she now presents the one-woman show it inspired, Tiananmen Annie. A hilarious and heartbreaking account of a year spent in China, it follows Starbuck’s experiences as a student trying to find her way in a strange country rocked by revolution. Along the way, she encounters an array of memorable characters, ranging from an old woman with bound feet to a heroic hunger strikers. As the world continues to reel from revolutions in Venezuela and Kiev, the Arab Spring and elsewhere, Starbuck’s chronicle is as meaningful today as it was 25 years ago.
