Ford Amphitheatre (Hollywood, CA)
Pulitzer-winning composer John Adams’ innovative opera-musical hybrid I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, dramatizing the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, makes its L.A. premiere from the Long Beach Opera. Acclaimed for its bold productions of new and rarely performed works, LBO is “opera at its most imaginative” (LA Weekly) with an “unequalled history of operatic innovation” (Los Angeles Times). This “song play,” with libretto by June Jordan, is a modern day Threepenny Opera that weds blues, gospel, minimalism, funk and pop to tell the story of seven diverse Angelenos who are intertwined on a journey toward love and self discovery.
