The Winter’s Tale: Shakespearean Romance Gets Fairy-Tale Setting

Star-crossed lovers, a banished child, a loyal servant, a clever thief — and yes, a bear — are all featured in Shakespeare’s roller-coaster ride The Winter’s Tale, presented by The Porters of Hellsgate Theatre Co. One of Shakespeare’s late romances, The Winter’s Tale centers around the jealous King Leontes, who flies into a rage when he believes his pregnant wife Hermione and his good friend King Polixenes are lovers. By the time he discovers the truth, he’s lost everything. However, years later, a miraculous turn of events brings a chance for redemption. Fully embracing the Tale‘s fable-like qualities, director Jesse James Thomas stages the play between the pages of a storybook (quite literally). Even the most stone-hearted will be moved and amazed by the Porters’ production at Actors Forum Theatre.
