Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB (Long Beach, CA)
The ancient beauty and graceful movement of Khmer classical dance casts a stunning spell in this rare appearance by a hand-picked ensemble of Cambodia’s best dancers and musicians. This centuries-old art form, known for its elaborate golden costumes and expressive hand gestures, was once only performed for royalty, in a spiritual display meant to connect the kings to the gods and their ancestors. The sister of Cambodia’s current king, Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, has led the acclaimed company since the ’80s. She’s also is the choreographer and one of the its most accomplished former performers. Accompanied by a live orchestra and a female chorus, the dancers’ “courtly quality” (The New York Times) makes for an elegant evening.
