Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, CA)
A French composer’s ode to Spanish music, an adventurous new concerto for three cellos and an enigmatic masterpiece that still sparks lively conversation more than a century after its composition — they’re all part of this fascinating and international LA Phil concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Maurice Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole, an exotic homage to the folk music of the composer’s Basque heritage, opens the concert. It’s followed by the West Coast premiere of Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s unique three-cello concerto. And the program comes to a satisfying close with Edward Elgar’s brilliant and much-debated Enigma Variations, an appropriately enigmatic work full of clever personal allusions and a yet-unsolved riddle regarding its principal theme.
