"New World Symphony"

Now in the midst of its 80th anniversary season, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra salutes some of the classical canon’s great masterpieces. Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony, subtitled From the New World, definitely falls into that category. It was one of the first major works to incorporate American folk-musical influences, and it’s been wildly popular ever since its premiere in 1893. In fact, Neil Armstrong famously took a recording of it with him to the moon. The symphony’s prize-winning principal cellist Cecilia Tsan personally chose Elgar’s concerto for her appearance as a soloist, and the evening opens under the baton of guest conductor Bruce Kiesling with Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave, inspired by the Scottish seaside. There’s live entertainment and cocktails for purchase in the lobby before the show, along with a pre-concert talk.
