TV icon Dick Cavett stars as — you guessed it — Dick Cavett in Hellman v. McCarthy, a live stage play that dramatizes one of the most explosive moments in talk show history and its fiery fallout. In 1979, during an episode of Cavett’s lively PBS interview program, Mary McCarthy, the venerable critic and writer, called fellow literary titan Lillian Hellman “dishonest,” famously elaborating that “every word she writes is a lie, including ‘and’ and ‘the.'” Hellman later sued, igniting a firestorm that swept the literary world and sparked this witty play by Brian Richard Mori. Alongside Cavett, whose “astringently funny presence,” The New York Times declared, ” … adds layers of charm and verisimilitude,” Flora Plumb plays Hellman and Rowan Michael Meyer plays Hellman’s caretaker in Hellman v. McCarthy at the Saban Theatre.
