Highways Performance Space and Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)
Though the Los Angeles Poverty Department may sound like some sort of government agency, it’s actually an acclaimed theater group, made up of mostly low income, formerly homeless people from the city’s infamous Skid Row. They’re coming to Santa Monica’s legendary Highways Performance Space for the U.S. premiere of their award-winning 2008 piece that pairs live actors with a screening of Akira Kurosawa’s Red Beard. Set in an indigent Japanese hospital, where the cycle of suffering seems never-ending, the 1965 film explores the dynamics of extreme poverty. The movie plays in its original language on a small monitor, while the troupe of 10 performers brings the story to emotional life through movement and action.
