A cult favorite in the Northern Soul scene, Bettye LaVette scored a top ten hit in the early ’60s with her very first single, “My Man – He’s a Loving Man,” but stayed mostly under the radar after that. While her records didn’t hit it big, her popularity as a live performer kept her going strong well into the 2000s when she finally reached a mass audience with her covers of classic songs from the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who and others. She celebrated her 50th anniversary in 2012 with the release of her autobiography and another cover album featuring songs from The Black Keys, Tom Waits, Sly Stone and more. Her concert at the Smothers Theatre in Malibu is sure to be one to remember.
