James Armstrong Theater at Torrance Cultural Arts Center (Torrance, CA)
The best way to experience the San Francisco Opera’s gorgeous production of Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele was to go to San Francisco, buy a ticket at the War Memorial Opera House, and see it unfold before you live on stage. But you missed your chance! The show was over a year ago. Plus, you’re in Southern California. So what do you do? You watch a high-def screening of the show at the James Armstrong Theater in Torrance instead. Sure, it’s not quite the same thing — but it’s the best you’re going to find on a Sunday afternoon, especially since football season is over. Mefistofele is a retelling of Goethe’s Faust, the story of a a desperate man who makes a pact with the Devil, trading his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. The opera is, in the words of The New York Times, a work of “choral grandeur and melodic richness,” and it stars a cast of some of the opera world’s great voices, including Ramón Vargas, Patricia Racette and Ildar Abdrazakov.
