When Hurricane Katrina blew through New Orleans in 2005, nowhere was the devastation greater than in the Lower 9th Ward, an already underserved neighborhood on the east side of the city. And though some of the area has recovered since, there is still much work to be done — and you can help without ever leaving L.A. Since Mardi Gras is such a large event in New Orleans, HM157 (a grassroots art space and community center in a funky old Lincoln Heights house) is hosting a benefit Mardi Gras party, replete with enough music, costumes, Southern-style booze and food to make you feel like you’re celebrating in the Big Easy itself. Dress up, drink, eat and dance (beads will be provided upon entry) guilt-free; proceeds will go to a nonprofit farm and education center that empowers at-risk youth in the Lower 9th Ward.
