Most recently a hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, Into the Woods began as a live musical that took Broadway by storm. A fresh spin on several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this production by Actors’ Repertory Theatre of Simi at Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center skillfully interweaves several classic fairy tales into one epic story that shows what happens when things get real in the fairy-tale world. Unable to bear children, a baker and his wife agree to complete a number of tasks for a witch who promises to grant them their wish if they’re successful. During their journey, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Jack (of Beanstalk notoriety) — each of whom has their own wish. All the storybook characters discover that wishes granted often come with a hefty price. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, the original Broadway run won critical praise and numerous awards. The cast recording, which includes “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky” and “No One Is Alone,” took home a Grammy.
