Samuel Goldwyn Theater (Beverly Hills, CA)
In a time when people are watching movies on smaller and smaller screens, it’s easy to forget the grandeur of seeing a beautifully shot film on the big screen. Held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ This Is Widescreen screening series brings classic films that introduced widescreen formats back to the big screen. From the rarely screened Cinerama Holiday, an immersive journey around the world in 1955, to the glamour of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly romancing in the French Riviera in Hitchock’s To Catch a Thief to James Garner roaring around the race track in John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix to the wide-open western vistas of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! — these are all movies that do what only movies can do. Screenings also include pre-shows, which might include shorts, trailers, cartoons and behind-the-scenes footage.
