Heroes save the day in the Throwback Thursday Film Series with separate screenings of Flash Gordon and The Triplets of Belleville at Laemmle’s Royal Theatre. With a soaring soundtrack by Queen and campy special effects, Flash Gordon has become a cult classic in the years since its 1980 release. The movie follows a NY Jets quarterback as he flies into outer space and saves the universe, and includes flying Hawkmen, rocket cycles and lightning fields. As for The Triplets of Belleville, this 2003 animated comedy tracks an elderly woman who ventures into the big city with her portly hound to rescue her cyclist son from the mafia. Along the way she gets help from three singing sisters with serious moves. Featuring very little dialogue and a swinging soundtrack, The Triplets of Belleville was nominated for two Academy Awards.
