Retrospective: Wenders in the Cities
On the occasion of the auteur’s 70th birthday, GOETHE FILMS takes you to the places that feature large in Wim Wenders’ oeuvre – discover his native Germany, visit Los Angeles and explore Japan with films including “Alice in the Cities”, “Land of Plenty” and “Tokyo-Ga”. – Accompanied by an exclusive free exhibition of Wim Wenders archive material at the Goethe-Institut Toronto Sep 10 – Nov 28.
Wenders at home – “Wrong Move“ (“Falsche Bewegung“, Germany, 1975, 103 min), directed by Wim Wenders, with Rüdiger Vogler (“Lisbon Story”), Hans Christian Blech (“The Longest Day”), Hanna Schygulla (“Lili Marleen”) and Nastassja Kinski (“Paris, Texas”).
Goethe’s novel “Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship” provided the film’s source material – the German Bildungsroman in which traveling is synonymous with the search for one’s identity.
Glückstadt in northern Germany, Bonn, a palace along the Rhine, a housing project on the outskirts of Frankfurt and finally the Zugspitze — these are the stations of the journey young Wilhelm Meister embarks on to save himself from the gloomy irritability and despondency that plague him in his hometown. In unfamiliar places, he hopes that he will be able to do what he has always had an uncontrollable drive to do — to write. But his path leads him to a neverending series of failures, failing himself and the people he meets on his way.
Winner of the German Film Award 1975 in seven categories (Best Direction and Best Actors et al.)
“The first German film to describe the neuroses of the seventies in such a patient and precise way.” – Die Zeit
“It is utterly new – a revolution of cinematic consciousness and style.” – Spiegel
