Kevin Spicer: "Till Then/'Til Now"

On August 28, 1955, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman while buying some candy. And with every year since, his brutal death gains increasing importance in a nation plagued with chronic, violent racism. Now Kevin Spicer, who curated 2005’s The Murder of Emmett Till — Fifty Years Later and 2010’s The Emmett Till Project returns with a new series of performance works commemorating the 60th anniversary of the lynching that mobilized the Civil Rights movement. Along with Spicer, renowned performance artists Joyce Guy, Jason Luckett, Dale Guy Madison, J.M. Morris, Maura Owens Townsend (Project 21), S. Pearl Sharp, Pat Taylor (Jazzantiqua), Conney Williams and others will present original performance/music/dance pieces exploring Till’s legacy, the Civil Rights movement, and contemporary racial injustice. An installation of visual art will complement the performances, bearing additional witness to past tragedies and present challenges.
