The Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena, CA)
Celebrating women’s working relationships while shining a light on America’s skewed perceptions of body image, Josefina López’s comedy Real Women Have Curves remains as relevant as ever, especially now that it’s been updated for this Pasadena Playhouse production. The story tracks Ana, a young Mexican-American teen who’s torn between following the career path laid down by her seamstress mother, employed at a struggling East L.A. sewing factory, and pursuing her own dream of becoming a journalist. Adapted into a successful movie starring America Ferrera, the season-opening play stars Blanca Araceli (FX’s The Bridge), Santana Dempsey (HBO’s The Newsroom), Diana DeLaCruz (ABC Family’s Chasing Life), Cristina Frias (The Motherf*cker with the Hat at South Coast Repertory) and Ingrid Oliu (Real Women Have Curves, Stand and Deliver).
