Long Beach Performing Arts Center, Terrace Theater (Long Beach, CA)
Celebrate the vibrance of 20th century American composition with conductor Edward Cumming and the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. The centerpiece of the evening is one of George Gershwin’s best known compositions, An American in Paris. This jazzy, rhapsodic portrait of the French capital was inspired by his time there in the 1920s. Also on this program at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center: the raucous Candide overture by Leonard Bernstein, followed by living composer Frank Ticheli’s percussive, brassy Radiant Voices, written in 1993 to serve as “a light in the darkness” after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and the adventurous harmonies of Lowell Liebermann’s Concerto for flute and orchestra, featuring principal flutist Heather Clark and originally commissioned by world-renowned flutist James Galway.
