The Arts, Culture and Media Department of the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is proud to present The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Every year, talented students from Theatre and Performance Studies program come together to present a year-end production. Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating this exciting production, which will be presented each night at the Leigha Lee Browne Theatre at UTSC.
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui stars a small-time gangster Arturo Ui with big-time ambitions in 1930s Chicago. A darkly funny satire with a bitter aftertaste, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui was written by Bertolt Brecht in 1941 as he fled persecution from Hitler and the Nazis. Drawing parallels between Chicago gangsters and the Nazis, Brecht asks his audience to think about how, with different choices, the rise of small-time gangsters might, in future times and places, be resisted.
