Indie jazz orchestra The Delegation is the latest incarnation of pianist and composer Gabriel Zucker's musical experimentation. The group combines Zucker's complex rhythms and harmonies and his maximalist approach with an impressive roster of improvisers from all walks of musical life. Dropped into to the mix are melodies and lyrics that belong principally to the world of indie rock, producing a singular take on improvisation in the 21st century. The group's musical philosophy was profiled at length last year by the Jazz Gallery and the American Composers Forum. In the group's debut season, Zucker was awarded an American Composers Forum JFund grant to write an ensemble-defining evening-length work. The evening-length result, Evergreen (Canceled World), was premiered in May 2014 to a full house at the Jazz Gallery in New York, and was awarded an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. Evergreen will be released in October 2016 on ESP-disk.
