Following the declared state of emergency at the Sudan – South Sudan border regions by the Sudanese President Omar al Bashir, leading to the total closure of routes coming to South Sudan, Unity State has become food scarce with prices soaring on the available quantity.

Commissioner Gedi reported that his people are seriously facing starvation. “Traders are willing to  transport the small foodstuffs that they have, but they are frightened by air bombardment from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) because Abiemnhom is one of the nine Counties of Unity State seriously targeted by air raids,” Gedi said.

Gedi appealed to the State government and the UN to act quickly in saving the live of innocent civilians by supplying them with food and humanitarian need for the next four months until the next harvest season.

“The food shortage led to the displacement of many families from Abiemnhom to Warrap State, Abyei and Mayom County,” he said. “The people of Unity State are urging the National Government to quickly work to complete the construction of Bentiu-Rumbek-Juba road before the rainy season so that the people of Unity State can transport their food from Juba,” he added.

Unity State is also badly hit by fuel shortage hence affecting commodity transportation from Malakal.
