The jewelers all over India called off their strike after they met with the President of Congress and the Finance Minister of India on Friday.

The concerned individuals of the jeweler community in India met with Sonia Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee after which the all-India strike was called off until the parliament gives a final decision on the increase in the import duty on gold and increase in the excise duty on non-branded jewelry.

Different sources have announced that some of the demands put forward by the jewelers have been met as Sonia Gandhi assured that the concerns of the jewelers will be taken into consideration and be given as much relaxation as possible. Unknown sources have also informed that the Congress President has agreed to reduce one percent increase in the excise duty on the non-branded jewelry.

Jagjit Singh Sahdev, one of the jewelers meeting Sonia Gandhi said, “We requested her to give us an assurance that we will get relief. They told us that our problems will be heard. We have not been given a time period.”

President of All-India Swarankar Sangh Mahukar Chachad said, “We today met Sonia Gandhi and requested her to tell the government to roll back excise duty on non-branded jewelry, reduce customs duty and lower TDS on sale of jewelry.”
