The Western & Southern Open, the seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the year on the ATP World Tour is going to be held today at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments bring together the best fields in tennis at the most prestigious venues. This year’s field consists of eight of the Top 10 in the August 6 South African Airways ATP Rankings and 1-5 of the Top 20 overall. The last seven champions are in the draw. The top seed is four-time winner (2005, ‘07, ’09-10) Roger Federer, one of three former champions in the draw – Andy Murray (2008, ‘11) and Andy Roddick (2003, ’06). There are four players who have ranked No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in the draw – current No. 1 Federer, Novak Djokovic, Lleyton Hewittt and Andy Roddick.
It is one of four hard-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in North American (Indian Wells, Miami, Toronto) and three are on clay (Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid) while two are later in the year (Shanghai, Paris). The 2012 ATP World Tour ends with the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the official year-end tournament held in London. Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have already qualified for the eight-player field.
