Rain fell on Flushing Meadows interrupting the first day of play at the U.S. Open 2012, but the forced break was short enough that all of the day’s scheduled matches were completed, and kept it an interesting first day.
There were a few upsets, and some good performances from top seeds. Some of the more notable outcomes of the first day are as follows:
Andy Murray (3) defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-2, 6-4, 6-1
Jack Sock defeated Florian Mayer (22) 6-3, 6-2, 3-2 (Mayer retired from the match)
James Blake defeated Lukas Lacko 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
Roger Federer (1) defeated Donald Young 6-3, 6-2, 6-4
Samantha Stosur (7) defeated Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1
Sorana Cirstea defeated Sabine Lisicki (16) 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
Kristyna Pliskova defeated Julia Goerges (18) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1
Tennis resumes at Flushing Meadows on Day 2 of the 2012 U.S. Open with several Americans in action, including Andy Roddick and Serena Williams, as well as No. 2 Novak Djokovic all will take the court in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday.
Roddick, the 2002 champion and No. 20 seed, faces fellow American Rhyne Williams at 1 pm. Roddick reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open a year ago. He has not reached as far as the semifinals since he was the runner-up in 2006.
The second-seeded and defending champion Djokovic is looking to get back in form after disappointing finishes at Wimbledon and the Olympics, where he failed to reach the final. He will face Italian Paolo Lorenzi at 7 p.m.
Williams looks to continue her summer hot streak as she faces Coco Vandeweghe. Williams has won this event three times and reached the final in 2010, her most recent appearance. She will play immediately following the conclusion of the Djokovic match.
