El Portal Theatre (North Hollywood, CA)
Released in 1920, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is an early cinematic masterpiece that laid the foundation for the horror movie genre. Presented as an innovative dance theater production by Astra Dance Company, this new work combines the art of silent film with dance, acrobatics, projections and stage craft to retell the surrealistic film by Robert Wiene. The story is about a traveling hypnotist and his somnambulist oracle who arrive at a fair in a small German town. After a string of macabre events unfold, the villagers begin to search for answers leading them into the twisted past of Dr. Caligari. This expressionistic dance piece pays homage to a early piece of cinema while creating a new world of its own.
