Do you remember the day when you were first able to print articles and pictures in your own home with a printer? This probably seems like ancient times these days but the effect on those who lived without a printer before was quite profound. The next evolution of printing technology is now upon us as 3D printers are now a reality. 3D printers no longer just print on a 2-dimensional sheet of paper, they print physical objects that you can design yourself. 3D printing represents the cutting edge of consumer available D.I.Y. technology with a relatively small knowledge of electronics and hardware necessary. This technology allows you to prototype any design and spark a revolution that will shake the manufacturing industry to the core. What can you print in 3D? How about guitars, chocolate and coat hangers to start. Did you break a part of that really expensive equipment? How about printing a new part instead of buying an entire replacement? How about instead of buying toys for your child you design and print them yourselves rather than have them shipped from across the world? Please join the Institute for a Resource-Based Economy as we host a workshop that introduces and deconstructs the 3D printer (RepRap Prusa Mendel), explores its implications, and shines light on the field of local manufacturing. As a bonus, one lucky workshop participant will get scanned and receive a mini 3D version of themselves to take home!! Example Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VrEOzZnBqY At the end of the workshop students will; – understand the concept of 3D printing; – understand the soft/hardware involved; – know the cost involved (MUCH cheaper than you think); – know the small and large scale implications; – leave with plans and instructions on how to build a printer*. *Please bring a FLASH DRIVE with which to receive a detailed .pdf with more information. Join the open-source revolution.
