Pel surprised at Wimbledon with half -final place in men’s doubles game
David Pel has reached the semi -finals of the men’s doubles game at Wimbledon. The tennis player from Amstelveen, who is celebrating his 34th birthday on Wednesday, won by the side of Australian Rinky Hijikata in two sets of the Brazilians Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo: 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In the first set, only Matos and Melo had a breakpoint. They were unable to cash in – in the third game. In the tiebreak, Pel and Hijikata arrived at 6-3. The Brazilians served the first two set points, but in the third the Dutch/Australian couple struck.
In the second set, Pel and Hijikata broke the storage of their opponents at 3-3, after which Pel served the party on the first match point at 5-4.
Invitation
Pel, the current number 82 in the world in the doubles, already made the third round in London in 2023 together with the American Reese Stalder, his best result on a grand slam tournament.
The Swiss Jakub Paul has been the regular double partner of Pel in recent years, but the Dutchman went into a one -off for Wimbledon on an invitation from Hijikata. That decision appears to have not been good at Paul, who – as the AD reports – has put an end to the collaboration immediately.
