Supreme Court of India has announced on Thursday that the Right-To-Education (RTE) for the poor segments of the economy stands valid.
The SC gave its verdict that 25% of seats should be reserved for children belonging to low-income earning families who cannot afford education as it is their basic right. This was the verdict announced by the SC over the petition filed by some of the private schools who requested that this requirement be loosened up since it violates their autonomy and they consider that their resources are suffering due to this condition.
Kapil Sibal, the minister of human resource development in India, expressed “happiness” over the decision of the court. While giving an interview to one of the news channels, Sibal said, “Controversies have been put to rest. Our vision of education can now move forward.”
In India, millions of children falling in the age bracket of 6 – 14 years do not attend school. In order to promote education amongst children at a mass level, India incorporated in their law that children falling in this age bracket can demand free primary education from any private or public school. However, schools operated by minority groups educating their children do not have to abide by this condition as they do not receive any funding from the government.
