The Parti Québécois government has now announced to reveal its scandalous secular charter under a more “positive” title, i.e. Charter of Quebec Values, next fall, delaying an expectedly much heated debate into the topic of religious accommodations.

The Minister Responsible for Democratic Institutions, Bernard Drainville, alleged that he is hopeful that spreading the scope of the secular charter that was originally scheduled to release next month, will eventually aid in gaining the trust of opposition parties on the contentious issue. Mr. Drainville stated that “It will not only provide clear rules and a framework on how to manage religious accommodations, it will also affirm a number of values to which a vast majority of Quebecers adhere such as the equality between men and women, the equality of citizens notwithstanding origins, religion or mother tongue.” He added that “I am confident we can have this debate in a respectful manner, in a serene manner.”

Mr. Drainville has often spoken against allowing privileges to a specific religious community, alleging that it consequently denies other groups. Such statements have led the Liberal opposition to belive that, even under a different name, the secular charter will further divide Quebeckers. Discussing the matter, Drainville alleged that “we do want this debate to be about what unites us, not what divides us. What unites us. And I do think equality between men and women, between all citizens notwithstanding origin, religion, mother tongue — I do think these are important values if we want to build Quebec a united society.”
